I wrote this with Gordon Lightfoot in mind circa 1982. Being completely ignorant of the music business end of things back then, I arranged to drop off my demo at Gordon’s office in Toronto (per receptionist’s permission) with my Mom accompanying me on the drive from Buffalo to Toronto. It turned out that Gordon’s sister ran the publishing office there and explained to me in person since Gordon writes his own stuff, they didn’t need to listen to any “outside solicitations” and politely showed Mom and me to the door. Not sure why they didn’t tell me that when I called them in the first place! Anyway, the trip wasn’t in vain for Mom and I had a fantastic time seeing the sights and chowing down in Toronto.
Another memorable moment attached to this song was when I sang and played this for a wonderful waitress I had just met in NYC circa 1982 (hi Barb!) and she was moved to tears…turns out her father was lost at sea and the first couple of lines hit her hard.
The demo features Alan Dusel singing and playing keyboards. I’m on guitar, bass and coffee can drums. Somewhere there is a better version of this without the copious amounts of reverb but I can’t find it.
Always thought this made for a good
“road song”
